SKATE CREEK LEAVE NO TRACE SPOTLIGHT

JULY 14-16 2023, PACKWOOD, WA 

HELP shine a spotlight on challenges Skate Creek is facing, bring attention to community efforts, and spread

Leave No Trace education. Be a part of building momentum and inspire involvement for the future.

The following events are free and open to the public.

Friday, July 14, 6-8 pm:

Packwood Community Park, 12935 US 12 Hwy. 

Join us for an evening of fun and learning, including family-friendly games and activities. Learn more about how to protect nature and the outdoors, and create a fun, reusable pack-out bag for trash you find when enjoying outdoor spaces!

 

Saturday, July 15, 10am-2pm:

Packwood Saturday Market - Stop by the Leave No Trace, Pinchot Partners and Gifford Pinchot Trash Force table for fun swag and educational materials.

Saturday, July 15, 6-8pm:

Outreach and Trivia Night at the Packwood Brewery, 12298 US-12.  Join us for a social hour and trivia night to learn more about how to Leave No Trace and protect your favorite places while hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors.

Sunday, July 16, noon to 3pm:

Volunteer Clean Up Stewardship Project. 

Meet at 11:30 am at Packwood Community Hall for intros, safety orientation, and carpooling to site. Join Leave No Trace and volunteers from Gifford Pinchot Trash Force and Pinchot Partners for campsite and trash clean up, while learning about Leave No Trace. Wear closed-toed shoes/boots and bring water, sunscreen and sunglasses, and work gloves if you have them. Trash bags, glove liners, grabbers, and safety wear will be provided.

The Leave No Trace  organization has selected the Skate Creek area as one of 20 Spotlight sites for 2023. As outdoor areas are impacted by record use, this new initiative shines a light on communities rising to meet this challenge.

Randle Recycle Day

Gina and Dave Owen organized a Randle Recycle Day on May 13th in Randle. In association with Gifford Pinchot Trash Force and Pinchot Partners, the all-volunteer effort collected 36,000 pounds of tires, scrap metal and appliances.  Photo: Gina Owen

The Partners hosted a 2023 Annual Meeting at the Packwood Fire Hall, which included Board elections; a budget review; discussing a 2023-24 work plan, and more. Day two included presentations and discussion with representatives of the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Skate Creek Project Area Field Tour

9:30am - 3pm, Cowlitz Valley Ranger District 

Join us to view several sites within the Skate Creek project area, where we'll discuss riparian reserve thinning, Aquatic Organism Passages, commercial harvest, recreation, and early seral forests. We will gather behind the Packwood Timberland Library .

Yellowjacket Project Area Field Tour

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

9:30am - 3pm, Cowlitz Valley Ranger District

Public Lands Day Cleanup - GP Trash Force

10am, Packwood Fire Hall

On Public Lands Day, volunteers with the Gifford Pinchot Trash Force, the Forest Service, Packwood Improvement Club, and Lewis County Solid Waste collected 2,240 lbs of trash, recycled one water heater and one refrigerated appliance, and collected more than 500 tires for recycling! Our treasurer, David Owen, assisted in collecting and hauling tires.

Aquatic Restoration & Judd Timber Sale Field Tour

The Pinchot Partners are hosting our first field tour since 2019! Join the Partners, Forest Service staff, and the Cowlitz Indian Tribe to visit a beaver dam analog site and the recently harvested Judd Timber sale. Gifford Pinchot Trash Force Community Clean Up

10am, Packwood Fire Hall

Our friends with the Gifford Pinchot Trash Force are hosting a Leave No Trace Clean Up Day and FREE tire drive. Volunteers picking up trash will meet at the Packwood Fire Hall at 10am for safety talk, personal equipment handouts and instructions. Tires will be collected until 3pm. Please wear a mask, bring thick gloves, and maintain distancing.
